English Professor’s Thoughts on the Skypiea Saga of One Piece
Philip, Skypea is like that. There are some, like me, who loved it, so I'm with you there! I loved the anime more than the manga. But then there are some who hate it. I don't get it, but I have come to accept that and move on.
That’s the best approach!
Suggestion on parts/episodes to watch: Arlong park: Nami asking for Luffy's help. Drum Island: "A man only dies when he is forgotten" Arabasta: Crew's silent goodbye to Vivi Skypea: Luffy proving the sky island to Mont Blanc Cricket Try to watch most of the water 7 and ennies lobby arc. Definitely watch all of Sabaody, Impel down, MarineFord, post marineford.
Cheers! 🙏
I can listen to you guys talking about One Piece for hours
I’m glad you enjoyed the chat!
Ah, I see you also buy into the theory (well more of a hypothesis, really) that Usopp and Sogeking are the same person. However we do have definitive proof that they are two different people. For example: Sogeking always wears a mask, and Usopp doesn't! Also RIP Merry. We will always miss you, best boat.
That’s pretty compelling evidence, I must admit!
Black Beard is such a good bad guy, why does Allen hate him so much lol!
Philip, a running gag we have in the community is that Zoro isn’t lost, he’s just always walking towards the One Piece 🤣
I love this!
I'm so glad for this discussion, Philip! This duo with @TheLibraryofAllenxandria is a delight and the better version of a One Piece chat, in my opinion. I was happy for the One Piece Crew videos with Merphy and Mike when they were announced, and was bummed when you had to cancel them; I really don't get the fuss about some pseudo name spoilers, how could that push some people to be mean is baffling. But, I have to say that there were many moments where Allen was geeking out with Merphy (which I get, I've been reading One Piece since 2000 and do the same with my oldest friend 😆) about stuff that would happen later in the manga (although without spoilers), and you and Mike were just smiling, clueless, waiting for the moment to pass, and it doesn't make for such an engaging/entertaining discussion video. This feels more self-contained, and Allen can finally shine for what he brings to the table with his years of loving and growing through watching the One Piece anime (it reminds me of his excellent discussions on The Long Price Quartet). It's just too bad he's wrong about Blackbeard 🤭 I liked what you said about him and Luffy being two sides of the same coin. One is giving his all to reach his dream with his nakamas, when the other literally killed a nakama for his dream. Cyril
I’m glad you enjoyed Allen shining here - I did too!
ah, kaizoku fansubs. I used to be a part of the forum back in the day, fun times
Allen literally said all my homies hate Blackbeard 😂
Always wonderful to see you two 😊 even from someone who hasn’t read / watched any One Piece 😂
@@verosnotebook Thank you for watching, Vero! 😊
One of my favorite One Piece voice acting moments was the Usopp Spell in the Skypiea arc
If you’re going to watch the anime you need to watch One Pace. It’s a fan edited project that fixes the pacing by cutting out filler and padding. It’s seamlessly edited with the music and other sound effects so it doesn’t feel jumpy.
Is so interesting to see how old watchers of Skypeia tend to dislike that ark, contrast to new readers of the manga love that ark in particular. I think that what happens is that the Skypeia ark in the old animation was slow and didn't feel at the time like the plot move any forward. So many ppl said back in the day: just skip Skypeia you won't miss any plot development. But if anyone bother reading the manga would realize how fun the ark actually is and the huge implications of plot threads born in that ark.
The hilarious thing about all the Skypiea hate is that looking back now, it may have turned out to be one of the most critically important sagas. How clever Oda turned out to be in hiding so much in plain sight lol. Remember this when you catch up to where the story is currently at (Chapter 1121)!
Sogeking's theme song!
The first time I read Skypiea in the manga I absolutely adored it but on re-read it’s tough to get through. It just feels longer and slower. I do still love so many moments from it (Enel shocked face, Luffy’s massive shadow as he jumps) but I can see why some people really dislike it.
I would not recommend watching the anime. It takes so much creative liberties with certain things that don’t actually happen in the manga. There are moments that are great but I wouldn’t watch it as a whole. Plus the pacing is horrible
I agree with Allen. Chopper has the best backstory, but hes the worst crew member for sure
Ah, poor Chopper! Perhaps he doesn’t do too much, but I love it when he says, “Find a doctor!”
The golden age of fan subs will never come again Edit: please record your reaction to watching the anime scenes too!
It hurt hearing Allen talk about Usopp lol. He has been my favorite character since Alabasta. Sure Usopp isn't as cool as other crew members, but I think that is what makes him such a great character. Among these freaks of nature, like Luffy, Sanji and Zoro, Usopp feels like a breath of fresh air. Sure seeing Luffy charge headstrong into battle is great, but Usopp has to muster true bravery through overcoming his fear. Thus his moments of courage are more satisfying; he feels more human and to me is easier to relate to.
Well said!
I was raised by Doyle Verne Asimov Tolkien and, maybe Herbert. I am begging you to do One Piece justice your first time around, you reacting to One Piece is something that does not exist right now, there aren't established professors and writers in the western world caring to do a professional breakdown of One Piece, and I'm begging for it. If you ever need help with anything, I would love to be a part of the first time the largest Manga was broken down by a lover of fantasy and literary expert such as yourself. We need a pioneer in this, or honestly what hope does classic fiction even have if there's no intelligent disciplined people bridging the gap to a younger generation.
Oda uses a lot of onomatopoeia that I think doesn't translate well into english, so in manga translations some of that is lost. When Allen was talking of Luffy's VA using more sounds with Luffy it made me think perhaps in translating for the dub of the anime some of that onomatopoeia is lost there too.
Give Naruto a try
I hate to say that Allen seems to have a big "media literacy moment" with Usopp and its kinda annoying. Like he is not supposed to be this super cool badass character, he has his own story beats and parallels that will be further expanded upon the more you read. It reminds me of the shounen meatheads saying the Farmland arc of Vinland Saga was bad when the second season for the anime dropped because it didnt really have any fighting like the first season, when its one of the most thought provoking and well written arcs in manga/anime in general. (Also you need to watch Vinland Saga, I would actually recommend it over the manga. The anime adds a bunch of scenes that adds a ton of depth and also puts everything in chronological order since the manga tells a lot of the story through flashbacks at the very beginning and feels kinda retcon-ish because of it)
Project A-ko rules
Just a small little thing I noticed, Shanks actually never said for Luffy to give the hat when it becomes king of the pirates, just when he "becomes a strong pirate with a strong crew"
*when he becomes king of the pirates
At least that's what I remember from the English dub of the anime, so hopefully I'm not getting anything wrong
Bro mentioned Fushigi Yugi. Truly a man of culture.
I agree to some extent with Allen when it comes to Blackbeard. I liked him up to the point where Philip is now, but I lost all respect for him later on. I don’t wanna say too much about it, in case it might spoil anything for others
I feel like Allen hasn't been unlocked yet.
Good talk love black beard I feel unfortunately this is a matter of literacy and you will love black beard 😂
Not sure I understand the hate for blackbeard, he's an interesting, important, and hilarious character.
"You say Enel, some say Eneru, I call him Ener" Oh no, we just call him Eminem
I haven't heard someone mention Project Eiko in years, that really took me back.
Thank god been waiting for the next one piece video, my favorite part of the month, love these keep it up, hope these start coming out quicker, love the other vids too
Color me impressed. I’ve been watching/reading/part of the RUclips OP community since 2004(when it first came to the states), 07 for yt obviously. I know more on the topic of One Piece than I could tell you about finance(and I have a masters in it). As fans I think we are guilty at times of being pretty elitist on our love and knowledge for things we really enjoy and when you said you had a guy on that has One Piece close to his heart I thought “High bar professor…” but I was pleasantly surprised. Allen is a long term fan, a rightly knowledgeable guy and I appreciate him giving you pointers without spoilers. Good job Allen👍
Looking forward to the next talk with merphy (hopefully)
Yes! 😊
I love how petty Allen is but I might have to challenge him to fisticuffs if he doesn't explain the Blackbeard hate when he comes on again during Marine Ford lol
When we first met Zoro he was leading himself. He accepted Luffy as his captain and thought, "Ah, not worrying about leading anymore means I focus more on my swordsmanship." And we never saw Zoro take up a role as a leader again. When we first met Zoro he could navigate to Along Park and the side of the island that the Black Cat Pirates were, by himself. Luffy accepted Nami as the navigator and Zoro thought, "Ah, not worrying about directions anymore means I focus more on my swordsmanship." And we never saw Zoro putting thought to directions again. Dittos to the rest of the crew.
What kind of lasting contributions have the Vikings made? Ever hear of the English language? It was built from a combination of the Viking Germanic tongue and Old French thanks to the King of Francia deciding that rather than let vikings raid Paris every year, he'd just give them the land that became Normandy, where William the Conqueror, who took Briton, hailed from. I'd say that's a pretty big contribution.
A lot of Allans takes on OP are VERY similar to mine, though some are very different ! XD
Hell yeah Project A-ko.
Absolutely amazing discussion- I finished Thriller Bark right before starting this in the morning. I loved hearing both of you perfectly describe my experience with Water 7 like with how miserable I felt while watching Usopp Vs. Luffy. I was so sad that I would walk around the house like a zombie
Used to be a chopper super fan but ngl, the more you watch/read the more he’s relegated to merchandising. the chopper fall off Fr needs to be studied tbh 😔
Man Kaizoku fansubs, there has never been anyone else as good as them. Philip can't possible imagine how much their font game changed the feeling of the anime
Thanks for the videos Professor
Gonna say, you're objectively right about Skypiea. I didn't like it that much the first couple times, but it's become one of my favorites, if for no other reason than Noland and Calgara's flashback. Beautiful story of friendship, and a heartbreaking tragedy.
Skypiea is among the best arcs. People who disagree were ruined by the anime and cannot forget the impression it left behind. Blackbeard sucks so much he becomes amazing... in the eyes of someone, I suppose. While certain villains are hateable for everything they stand for or have done, Blackbeard is hated purely because everyone can see their childhood bully in them. He's pathetic yet everything goes his way. He schemes like shit, and yet he gets away with screwing others over again and again. Unlike so many other characters, he is not the villain we want him to be, but he's the hemorrhoid ruining things every time he appears. He is the sand in your mouth, the rot in the apple, the unwashed wet mongrel who went swimming in a bog Sure, he's a villain, but one without the suaveness and epicness and just an utter menace to be around. (Also, his speaking segment in that one opening RUINS that entire opening for me.)
It's a complicated subject for sure. Has fantasy been racist? Absolutely it has. Particularly in the pulps you'll find some stuff that'll make you cringe today, even from the good pulp writers like Robert E. Howard. Even Tolkien had some racial stuff in Lord of The Rings, though I'm not sure if that was conscious on his part since he was a pretty vocal anti-racist (at least for the time) and anti-Nazi (which you bring up in the video.) I am generally uncomfortable with judging people who lived in the past, because I don't know if it's up to us to really judge them based on our changed values. But I do think these topics should be talked about, a lot of my objections when it comes to this topic is how they're being discussed. I know I'm a bit late on this, but great video. You handled the topic very well, as much as you could for such a touchy subject.
Thank you, Britton!
The fansubs conversation is so real. It brought me right back.
scenes u need to watch of the anime (i cried in all of them lol): Sanji's goodbye to Baratie Nami's backstory Nami - Luffy strawhat scene in Arlong Park Choppers backstory Chopper sendoff Vivi goodbye in Alabasta Luffy - Usopp fight Robin's backstory Robin's "i want to live" Merry saving the crew in Ennies Lobby Merry's funeral
Cheers!
